Why Your Marketing Isn’t Landing (And What Might Be Missing)

Building Your Systems, Building Your Mindset

We’re excited to feature a guest blog from Ashleigh Hamm, Marketing Director + Owner of Create Marketing. She brings a perspective we see often, business owners are putting in the effort with their marketing, but without clear direction, it can start to feel like guesswork. As many businesses experience, activity alone doesn’t always lead to results when strategy is missing.

Ashleigh walks through how clarity around your business, your clients, and your numbers can change the way your marketing actually performs.

We’ve had a lot of conversations lately with business owners who feel stuck when it comes to their marketing.

They’re showing up consistently.
They’ve invested in branding.
They’re posting, trying ads, maybe even working with a marketing team.

And still… it’s not quite clicking.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And more often than not, the issue isn’t your marketing.

It’s the strategy behind it.

Busy Doesn’t Always Mean Effective

Most business owners we work with aren’t lacking effort – in fact, it’s usually the opposite.

They’re doing a lot.

Posting regularly, trying to stay visible, keeping up with trends, testing different platforms…But without a clear direction, marketing can start to feel like guesswork.

You try something new, hope it sticks, and when it doesn’t, the instinct is to do more.

More posts. More platforms. More spend.

But more activity doesn’t always solve the problem. Sometimes, it just adds to the noise.

Let’s Talk About the “Ideal Customer”

One of the most common things we hear is: “We just want more of this type of customer.”

And when we dig a little deeper, that usually means:

They’re easy to work with. They don’t push back on price. They’re enjoyable.

All valid things, but not always the full picture. Because the better question is: Is your “ideal customer” actually ideal for your business?

Not all clients are created equal. And not all revenue moves your business forward.

Some projects can look great on the surface, but behind the scenes, they take more time than expected, come with tighter margins, create operational stress, and pull you away from higher-value work.

And then there are the clients who might not be the “easiest,” but the work is repeatable, the margins are stronger, the process runs more efficiently, and it actually supports where you want to take your business.

That’s where the shift starts to happen.

Clarity Changes Everything

If you don’t fully understand how your business makes money, it’s really hard to know who you should be attracting.

And when your idea of an “ideal customer” is based more on preference than reality, your marketing can quickly become misaligned.

It often shows up as lots of interest, but not the right inquiries. A full schedule, but not the kind of work you actually want more of. Messaging that keeps changing, because nothing quite seems to stick.

At that point, it can feel like a marketing issue. But more often, it comes back to clarity.

Strategy First. Marketing Second.

The businesses that see real traction with their marketing have one thing in common, they’ve taken the time to get clear.

They understand what work is actually profitable, which clients align with their strengths and capacity, and where they want the business to go. From there, everything else becomes easier. Their marketing isn’t trying to reach everyone, it’s designed to attract the right people. And when that happens, marketing starts to feel different.

It becomes more intentional. More focused. More aligned. You might even see fewer leads, but they’re better ones. And that’s where real growth starts to happen.

A Better Place to Start

If your marketing hasn’t been delivering the results you expected, it might not be time to do more. It might be time to take a step back. Ask yourself:

Do I really understand how my business makes money?

Do I know which clients are the right fit, not just the easiest?

Because once you have that clarity, marketing stops feeling like guesswork… and starts doing what it’s meant to do.

Final Thoughts

Marketing isn’t about attracting more people. It’s about attracting the right people.

And that starts with understanding your business – your numbers, your capacity, and your direction. Once that piece is clear, everything else gets a whole lot easier.

And sometimes, having the right strategic support to figure that out can make all the difference.
