Focus…The Only “F” Word A Leader Needs

Where do you want to go? I don’t know, where do you want to go? It doesn’t matter to me, if you have a preference, I am open to anything? It really doesn’t matter to me?

It is a story that is played out by spouses, friends, co-workers everywhere. It is certainly funny to watch but can be incredibly painful to be a part of.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t only play out when it comes to choosing restaurants. We all know of a leader or boss, who seems to be playing out this exact conversation in their own head. One minute they are going one way and then the next, an entirely different way.

You see most entrepreneurs are known for; their creativity, their ability to generate ideas, and to take quick action. Going through their heads, is a flurry of ideas, all which could be the answer to taking their business or company to a new whole new level. It could be a new product or service. It could be a new way of marketing their services. It could be approaching a different type of customer.

The difference between the leaders who are successful and the ones, who just continue to generate ideas, without ever having something to show for it, is in one simple word, focus.

When you are leading, it is up to you to set a course or direction so that the people around you can, follow. If the direction you are going is constantly changing, then simply the people wanting to help you succeed, become paralyzed. This means you have to be able to harness your thoughts and ideas, and to fight the urge to change direction midstream if you really want to lead.

So why is this so hard?

There are two main reasons. The first one can be attributed to not wanting to set a goal. You see, if you never set a goal, then there is no chance of failure. You can just go along, and never really need to make up your mind. This allows all kinds of possibilities to enter, but unfortunately never really creates much of a result. There are managers, bosses and business owners, who really don’t want to be accountable to having to achieve a result and who are more than willing to let things happen as they may. Of course this can work to a point, but generally produces a mediocre result.

The second is what I call resilience. For a large number of people, it is easier to do something different than it is to live through the boredom of getting good at something. There are a lot of great ideas that never really have the chance to succeed, before someone gives up on them. Some of the best leaders in the world, have a “stick to it” mentality, no matter how much is thrown at them.

It doesn’t matter how smart you are. It doesn’t matter how much money you have. It doesn’t matter how lucky you are. If you want to lead. If you want to succeed, it doesn’t happen by accident. Leading, no matter what level you are in an organization, requires you to get clear on what you are going to achieve and to be prepared to fight for it. Take the time, to get clear in your focus and you will be amazed at how the universe will come to play, in making it happen.
